Chance & Circumstance, Amanda Wright

02 November 2021

Amanda Wright, quilter extraordinaire, was the guest speaker at our Threads’ meeting on Tuesday November 2nd.

She began by telling us how, as a child, her “Creativity” was dappled, accessing as many activities as she could.  Amanda’s career began as a peripatetic music teacher who eventually became involved with Ledbury Quilters - a memorable introduction into Textiles, their adaptability and versatility.

Amanda completed her City and Guilds in Patchwork and enhanced her knowledge by learning free machine embroidery along with designing and dyeing her own fabrics.

She held many positions of responsibility in guilds and eventually, by a quirk of fate, was fortunate enough to take over The Weavers Cottage in Ledbury, known to us as The Weavers Gallery.

Poetry Week in Ledbury opened the door for Amanda, who recognised that the increased footfall in the town was the perfect opportunity to “Spread the word” regarding Textile Art and so the “Cottage” gave way to the “Gallery”, venue for countless creative exhibitions, and the rest is history.

Stained glass and poetry, amongst others, have served as inspiration for Amanda’s quilts. A member of The Contemporary Quilt Guild, her love of Geometry along with her meticulous attention to detail, incredible precision and understanding of colour drew gasps of incredulity and amazement from the audience (along with, I’m sure, a wonder of how patient Amanda must be!!!)

Considering that the definition of Quilting is two or more pieces of fabric held together with stitch, Amanda certainly has surpassed this and she amazed us, not only with her prolific and technical quilting, but also with her knowledge and the humble presentation of her work … obviously a much loved passion!

A very enjoyable and interesting talk. Thank you, Amanda.
