Natural Dyeing and Eco-Printing, Lizzie Godden

05 July 2022

Threads were visited on Tuesday by Lizzie Godden. She lives in the Forest of Dean, a beautiful part of the country which provides a rich source for her special textile interests.

Having shared with us her gurus of using natural materials for dyeing fabric:

Jenny Dean – Wild Colours: How to Make and Use Natural Dyes

Catharine Ellis and Joy Boutrup – The Art and Science of Natural Dyes,

she shared with us the huge variety of colours that can be produced using plants as varied as rhubarb, golden rod, oak leaves, mahonia bark and avocado stones. Sometimes shibori techniques are incorporated in the dyeing process to add a decorative effect.

The next step is for Lizzie to incorporate the material with another of her loves, slow stitching, to produce pieces such as “Winter View”.

The second strand of her talk concerned the use of leaves for printing onto fabric and paper. Lizzie referenced the work of people such as Irit Dulman, Fabienne Dorsman-Rey and Lotta Helleberg. Members were appreciative of what can be produced using what, for some, was a new strand of textile work.

A question session enabled members to find out more details of:

mordanting processes – including information re their use with different materials such as plant based/manmade from natural sources

the types of paper she uses when applying dyes.

Thanks were expressed for a talk which opened up fresh ideas and possibilities.
