Our very first speaker was an absolute joy as she was warm, friendly and funny and showed us some of her colourful detailed pieces. Nikki studied fine art and started creating collages from paper. However she felt dissatisfied because these pieces were flat and she was looking to create something more three dimensional. She tried marquetry, layering the wooden shapes and covering them with tissue and paint which achieved a more 3D effect but was very heavy.
She then moved on to using clear plastic as the base, sewing into it with a machine. She used funky foam shapes to create height and colourful cellophane as the basis for many pieces. She has utilised many different objects such as tooth flossing picks, a ballcock, plumbers’ grey foam pipe insulation and much more, all wrapped or covered to disguise their humble origins and giving the pieces a sculptural texture.
Behind many of her pieces are for example the Conference of the Birds, a Persian poem, or the legend of St Werburgh and the geese, Asian mandala patterns or even the plight of the oceans and animals as highlighted by David Attenborough, all giving her inspiration for her colourful textile art which is full of detail.
