A Stitch in Line, Rachael Singleton

07 June 2022

Rachael has been exploring her interest in line and thinks it stems from an early age, as many children develop a schema or mental codification of experience resulting in specific responses to certain stimuli.  She knows she always loved creating those samplers in binca at school, as she loved its lines and creating those regular lines of stitches.

She took us through various projects that illustrated her love of line but also her insight into what this project meant from her.  She created a “cloak” of lines of feathers in textiles in response to her mother’s dementia with the strength of the colours fading and gaps in the lines and the odd dark feather in amongst the paler colours.

She showed us various pieces from 3D sculptures to flat felted pieces stemming from exploring pebbles found on a Cornwall beach with lines of different stone and minerals running through them.  Her pods were following an idea of containment and wrapping which was also displayed in her rooms and cabinets of curiosities.  Looking back at her projects, she often referenced her personal experiences and recognised that she had been responding to inner feelings in her creations.

We saw two pieces of collaborative work for the Makers Project 2019, a chair and a bronze for the Arts Council called Holding the Line and she described the variety of processes involved.

It was an insightful talk, demonstrating how creative textiles can be a response to our experiences with lots of tips on use of materials and techniques too.
