Talk, Jenny O’Leary

02 April 2024

Jenny travelled down from Ellesmere to tell us about her work and run a workshop.

She started out in ceramics but found that textiles were where her heart lay, in particular the traditional technique of Batik.

Today, she mainly works in coloured tissue paper on which she uses wax resist, bleach and ink to create her pictures. One method Jenny told us about was trapping tissue, fabric even newspaper between 2 layers of tissue paper and glueing them together with watered down PVA glue to make a new fabric on which you can then bleach and decorate with ink or hand stitching. These papers can be preserved with acrylic wax or varnish.

Jenny brought along many examples of her work for us all to examine and get inspiration from.

Her current work is inspired by John Piper and Jenny can be found in WOW Book 5 showing you how to create a Provencal Landscape.

You can see more of her work on www.jennyolearytextiles.wordpress.com
