Kogin Embroidery – A Forgotten Technique, Liz Almond

01 March 2022

How fortunate the members of Threads were to spend an hour listening to Liz’s talk and seeing her wonderful array of work.

Liz’s life has centred on embroidery, having worked as an embroiderer and a tutor throughout her career. She has worked all over the world ranging from Africa to Canada and the United States of America. With Covid restrictions meaning an end to her travels, lockdown saw her increasing her on-line classes with projects being worked on by members of many countries, including Ukraine.

Her embroidery techniques encompass blackwork, pulled thread work, embroidery into quilting, and Japanese Kogin. Inspired by the architecture and designs she has seen on her travels, Liz has developed many of her own designs. Her website, “Blackwork Journey”, is testament to her beautiful work, with charts to use, projects to buy, freebies plus information on a range of techniques such as useful knotted stitches and fabrics to use. She has written articles for magazines and contributed to a number of books.

Members were able to handle many of her pieces of embroidery as they were passed around the room and, having been inspired by Liz’s enthusiasm, were able to purchase one (or more!) of Liz’s kits.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and inspirational afternoon. Thank you Liz.
