On February 1st, an extremely interesting and unusual talk was given by our own THREADS’ member, Louise Burn.
Her love of boxes and beautiful fabric which have been with her for many years, has taken her into the realm of “box maker extraordinaire”!
Inherited from her grandmother, an etui* prompted Louise’s journey into a world of inspirational fabrics, intricate box construction and miniaturization.Attending an “Art in Action” exhibition at Oxford, Louise was both amazed and inspired by the work of a silversmith who had created a singular piece containing several tiny pieces. This chance event gave her the impetus to start planning and constructing her own etuis.
Many hours of blood, sweat and tears, and love must have gone into each and every box which Louise showed us. Each, inspired by the fabric, went on to become an absolute plethora of intricate detail. Every layer opened to reveal so many varied types of decoration, from embroidery to the use of charms. Each box was filled with what can only be described as magical wonder. The gasps of incredulity, excitement and amazement were audible – there was even a bit of banter when certain tables were last to have one of the precious boxes to look at!!!
It was a wonderful presentation of such beautiful and unusual work and it was also evident how much love, thought and meticulous planning had gone into each of Louise’s creations. I felt that we all left with a sense of child-like wonder and pleasure after being there as the magic unfolded!
