Pattern, Angie Hughes

On Tuesday 1st November, members welcomed Angie for what was for her a new talk on pattern.

A 3D piece of work that she had created for a competition, considering farms in the air, set her really thinking about the theme. For her personally, pattern conjures up calmness, comfort, orderliness and repetition.

Angie’s slide presentation showed beautiful examples of:

• pattern in nature e.g. zebra skins, fern seeds;
• man made pattern e.g. bricks, fields (as seen from the air), house roofs (S. Africa);
• work produced by artists which show pattern e.g. Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Anni Albers;
• work produced by fabric designers e.g. Lucienne Day, Orla Kiely

Having told us that she “defaults back to things that are easy”!, Angie showed us examples of how she has used pattern in her work, including a tool holder and her “sunny day” pencil case. She included information about the processes that she uses.

In conclusion, Angie shared with us some titles of books from her library which she has drawn on for ideas e.g. Charleston by Quentin Bell and Virginia Nicholson, The Elements of Design by Loan Oei and Cecile De Kegel.

This talk provided lots of ideas for members to try and lots of sources for further inspiration. Thanks were expressed and we look forward to further ideas next year.
