In this talk, illustrated by many wonderful examples of her work both on screen and on the tables, Hannah told us how she got started in her career as a freelance hand embroiderer, tutor and author and talked about some of the highlights so far.
Although as a freelance embroiderer she may be asked to undertake a variety of work she specialises in particular in goldwork and has developed a style using gold and silver wires as part of the embroideries. These feature in her three-dimensional goldwork flowers, where she produced a set of four sculptures representing the four seasons which won her first prize in the Hand & Lock textile art open category competition in 2019. Another impressive project, this time by all accounts a bit of a labour of love, was the silver and sage green wedding bouquet and buttonhole she produced for her sister’s wedding in 2022.
Tambour beading is another of her specialisations, and finding a lack of guidance on this she set about teaching herself and developing techniques which she has now distilled into her recently published book on Tambour Beading Techniques and Projects. This is highly illustrated and she amused us by talking about the challenges of combining gardening (she likes to grow and photograph flowers for inspiration for her works) with also having suitably clean hands and nails as she photographed her tambour techniques.
Hannah is obviously passionate about sharing her enthusiasm and expertise and also talked about her tutoring work at Highgrove Traditional Crafts and the embroidery classes she teaches both online and in person.
