Genetically Modified Demonstration by Lorraine and Sian

02 January 2024

Reusing old denim creatively

A demonstration by Sian of how to cut up an old pair of jeans to maximise almost every bit of material, including unfolded seams, pockets, zips, frayed and distressed areas. Lorraine proceeded to show various ways the material might be reused such as a plant pot cover made from the bottom of a leg, a lovely bracelet cuff and a small denim Christmas tree. A demonstration of fringing long strips, in order to gather them into flowers. Having provided 3 small squares of denim, she showed how to fringe them showing how the white or blue threads, of which denim is made, became the fringe. She encouraged participants to add buttons, other scraps of material etc. plus stitches to the small squares. Limiting the colour palette, in order to link the squares together. Creating 9 squares they could be arranged in a frame.

Using free machining and material scraps by Sara

Sara demonstrated how to take scraps of coloured material, and cut them into rough flower and leaf shapes. She then attached them to a new piece of material, which she fixed in a hoop. Using her machine as a drawing tool with different coloured threads, she drew petals and stamens, leaves and stalks. She created a lovely posy of flowers.

Old Christening gowns

Rosemary brought a selection of old christening gowns, donated by Louise, in a variety of materials, for members to examine. Louise says that we can use them in any way we want to. Members were encouraged to sign up to the challenge of changing a gown in any way they wish. At the next meeting members will select their gown, it will be photographed and they can take it away to work on it.

How to look after your machine

  1. Always cover your machine when not in use, even just with a large bit of material.
  2. Wipe clean the outside casing and bed.
  3. Fluff build up can cause missing stitches, not zigzagging, bird nesting, feed dogs not feeding. Open the shuttle bay and take out shuttle and its case and use a stiff brush to DEFLUFF.
  4. Open side or top to Defluff too. Regularly defluff machine.
  5. A question and answer session provided further tips and hints.
  6. Oil only one drop every 6 months in oil points.
