07 November 2023

We were delighted to welcome Jo Teague to our November meeting. Jo is a community artist, and a hand embroiderer, she works with people to develop their creativity.

Jo is also a textile historian. Some of Jo’s past projects include Tewksbury stitch story community project which she describes as the Bayeux Tapestry of Tewksbury. This post Covid project stitched by 8000 people. It measures 6 metres by 1 metre and is displayed at the Heritage Centre, Tewksbury.

Jo’s talk about her current research was fascinating. She is currently exploring non elite 19th century needlework produced by young girls who resided in the Cheltenham Female Orphan Asylum. This institution produced Ladies maids, with an exceptional level of needlework.  She shared with us examples of samplers made by the girls and explored some of the meanings, behind the work.

The talk was both informative and inspiring. The group had so many questions at the end of her talk that we have said that we would like her to return and give another talk in the future.
